An affiliate marketer is someone who connects a customer (someone wanting to make a purchase online) to a merchant (someone who has the product the customer wants to buy). Simple enough? So, how does it work?

You know how, when a salesman goes around promoting a product, he maybe allowed a certain percentage of the proceeds from the sale to keep as an incentive? Well, this is exactly how affiliate marketing works. There are companies online that offer you upto 75% of their sales as commissions for helping them get a sale. There are many companies online that have affiliate programs. If you want to find these, just do a search saying “Company or industry name+affiliate”, and you will find some that appeal to you. Signup is usually free, and they also have all kinds of tools to help you do a better job, the affiliate. When you sign up, the merchant usually gives you a unique affiliate ID, and any banners, promotional products you get from them will have this ID embedded in them.

So, after you have found the product you want to promote, you need to start advertising – in a way that you have a chance to catch some potential customers. One place where the recession has proven to be a blessing is on the internet. With more and more people opting to shop online (since it’s cheaper, and you can do it from the comfort of your home), the internet is becoming a booming business place. For your own start-up business, that’s a great place to be – with some of the lowest start-up costs.

You can start your home-based business with virtually nothing. If you’re looking for ways to beat the recession, this is a great way to do it. Hi and welcome to the Recession Whackers Blog!

Okay. So we’ve been all hearing about that word: recession. It’s spawned a spate of loads of new economic doublespeak. Words like ‘economic downturn’. Negative growth. Billions, no wait - trillions of dollars in ‘bailouts’. And we’ve read about smug executives putting those bailouts to good use by enjoying extra pay packages and extended vacations at company expense. It’s all in the name of stimulating the economy. I suppose it’s stimulating someone, somewhere.

Prices keep going up; oil was down, but it’s going up again; invest in gold, don’t invest in gold; we’re on the road to recovery, then we aren’t. Layoffs. Cutbacks. Pink slips (and we’re not talking about ladies’ underwear either). Some despair, while others grin and bear it. And now our money is getting devalued due to the extra ‘stimulus’ packages aided by unabashed, unrestrained currency printing by the Federal Reserve. That means that pension you might have been saving up for is suddenly worth less now. Your assets are suddenly tanking in value. And everyone is going to need more money to buy the same old things. We hear terms like hyperinflation and dictionary printing goes into overdrive. Are we looking at a rehash of the Weimar Republic that took place in Germany after World War 2? That was way before I was born, of course, and way before I even entered a figment of someone’s creative thought processes. In case you were in the same stage at the time, that was when the Deutsche Mark lost value so severely that they had to carry baskets of currency to buy a loaf of bread.

Anyhow, let’s leave the economic analysis to those who do it best, and let’s get on to how it applies to us. So one might ask, as the normal Joe Blow on the street, how does it affect you and me? And how does one ride the wave of recession?

A few years back, about 8 months after the great Asian tsunami, my wife and I visited Phuket, Thailand. Reconstruction was underway, but there were still harrowing memories and testimonials of close calls. One story that really cheered me was a heartening account of two Scandinavian diehard surfers (no puns intended, I really mean that) at sea, who saw this huge wave coming at them and amazingly rode the wave. Before they knew it, they were hurtling through the air at 600 kph. They rode for more than a kilometer, way over Patong Beach, past the famous beachfront with all those restaurants, and the wave deposited them safely on the street behind, where they alighted from their magic carpet ride amidst cheers of onlookers.

Well, that’s a story of riding the wave if I ever heard one. So let’s now talk about 'recession whacking'. (Now there’s a term. Where are the printers gone?) This is exactly what we mean: recession whacking – as in when you beat the recession to win victory.

The purpose of this blog is just that: talk about victory over recession. We’re hearing enough gloom and doom. Let’s hear some stories of people who are riding the wave. Let’s talk about some ideas to beat the recession – practical ideas that work, ways to come out on top.
